Datamation Product of the Year Awards Announced

Hewlett-Packard

If the Datamation Product of the Year Awards were the Oscars, then this year’s Lord of the Rings would have to be Hewlett-Packard Co.

With three of the 10 awards voted by readers, HP was the biggest winner in this year’s contest. The company came out on top in the Client Systems/Laptop, Client Systems/Mobile and Server Hardware categories.

Script Logic

The field included the ubiquitous Microsoft Office 2003, but Datamation Product of the Year voters in the Desktop Product category this year gave the nod to Desktop Authority from ScriptLogic Corp.

The top vote getter is an interactive and remote-management tool for networked PCs. Users were won over by Desktop Authority’s ease of administration and use.

Trend Micro

A sure sign of the times is when spam warrants a new category of software.

As such, Datamation added anti-spam as a first-time category in its annual Product of the Year Awards. In the new category, users gave top honors to Trend Micro Spam Prevention Solution (SPS).

SAS Institute

The top finishers in the Enterprise Applications category of Datamation’s Product of the Year Awards were a powerful group, with application vendors ranging from SAP to IBM to Cognos. But the first- and second-place spots were claimed by SAS Institute Inc. and its lesser-known subsidiary, DataFlux Corp.

Datamation Product of the Year voters in this category crowned SAS’s Marketing Optimization tool as their favorite application overall. SAS Marketing Optimization helps companies get the most out of their limited marketing dollars by enabling them to better forecast the effectiveness of their campaigns. Knowing which initiative — the mass e-mail campaign vs. the targeted direct mail piece, for example — is more likely to result in extra sales is a potent lure.

Script Logic (again)

The Network & Systems Software Product of the year category acknowledges outstanding administration and monitoring software. This year’s winner is Active Administrator (AA) from ScriptLogic Corp. with 56 percent of the votes.

Active Administrator is currently only for Windows 2000, setting up and managing policies across the network without the use of agents. Its real function is to replace the rather limited built-in utilities that come with the Windows 2000 operating system. Active Administrator enables the administrator to plan, deploy and troubleshoot group policy objects (GPOs) before full deployment.
